Airport hacks you NEED to know
Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or flying for the very first time, navigating the chaos of check-ins, security lines, and boarding calls can feel overwhelming (I’m overwhelmed just thinking about it!). As a former flight attendant, I’ve picked up some hacks over the hundreds of flights I’ve done, that can make your airport experience a lot smoother.
1. Boots click and collect

If you’re traveling with just a carry-on, you’re probably all too familiar with the 100ml liquid rule. It’s a hassle trying to fit all your toiletries into those tiny containers. So my pro tip is: take advantage of Boots’ Click and Collect service.
You can order your toiletries online 72 hours before at regular prices (not the inflated airport prices) and pick them up after you’ve passed through security. This means you don’t have to worry about the liquid restrictions, and you’ll save a bit of cash too. It’s a win-win!
2. Skip the bathroom rush

One of the first things many travelers do after clearing security is head straight for the nearest restroom, usually because they’ve realised that Starbucks coffee they spent £8 on as they checked in suddenly needs drinking ASAP. Unfortunately, this often means some serious queuing (the British favourite past time) for some overused and pretty gross loos.
My advice? Skip the mad dash to the toilets after security or in the departures area and head for the ones in the arrivals section instead. These are usually much cleaner and more spacious, offering a far more pleasant experience. (General rule to go by is go where the crew go)
3. Pockets Are Your Secret Weapon

Maximise your carry-on allowance by filling your pockets to the brim. Wear a jacket or coat with plenty of pockets and treat them as additional storage space. I like to pack small essentials like underwear, toiletries, and electronics in tiny packing cubes or pouches and slip them into my pockets.
Once on the plane, you can transfer these items into a tote bag or even use them for the next hack. This hack not only helps you bring a bit more despite those pesky airline rules, but also keeps your essentials within easy reach.
4. Duty-Free Bags for Extra Storage

Did you know that items purchased at the airport, along with the bag they come in, often don’t count toward your hand luggage allowance? Buying something small from a duty-free shop and requesting a bag will be a much cheaper alternative to the ridiculous airline prices.
For example, WHSmith sells their bags for around 70p, and I don’t know about you but that’s much better than the crazy cost of extra baggage.
5. Pack for security

One of the most common mistakes travelers make is not being prepared for the security check, and as an over prepared control freak this makes me so ‘arghhh’. You know the drill, it never changes! Liquids, electronics, and anything in your pockets need to go in the tray. Yet, so many people arrive at the security checkpoint only to start frantically digging through their bags!
To avoid this, pack smart. Place all items that need to be screened separately at the very top of your bag or in a separate tote and just get it out super quick and easy and then packing at the other end you just put it at the top and go.
Airports may be stressful, but with a little preparation and these hacks, you can make your journey far more manageable. Whether it’s saving money, maximizing your carry-on, or simply avoiding the crowds, these tips will help you navigate the airport like a pro. Safe travels!
