Thailand is the ultimate paradise. From stunning beaches to lush jungles, it’s the perfect destination for backpackers and first-time visitors looking to explore some of the world’s most beautiful places. During my 1.5 months in this incredible country, I found a few spots that truly stole my heart. Here are my top five must-visit destinations in Thailand, each offering a unique experience that you won’t want to miss.

Ao Nang

If you’re heading to Krabi, Ao Nang should definitely be on your list. This charming beach town is the perfect base to explore the nearby islands and enjoy the beauty of the Andaman Sea. Whether you’re chilling on the beach or hopping on a boat to explore hidden coves, Ao Nang offers something for everyone.

The sunsets here are breathtaking – I’m talking about those picture-perfect skies that seem to go on forever. Don’t forget to visit Phra Nang Cave Beach and the Hong Islands for crystal-clear waters and serene beaches.

Top Tip: The local seafood is a must-try – from grilled prawns to fresh fish, you’ll find plenty of tasty options right by the beach.

Pai

Tucked away in the mountains of Northern Thailand, Pai is a laid-back haven that’s perfect for nature lovers. Known for its lush green valleys, dramatic waterfalls, and tranquil hot springs, Pai offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the cities.

There’s something incredibly special about waking up to stunning mountain views and spending your day exploring hidden waterfalls or soaking in the healing waters of Pai Hot Springs. If you’re looking for a spot to unplug and unwind, Pai is definitely it.

Top Tip: Rent a scooter to explore Pai’s surrounding nature. You’ll discover the town’s beauty at your own pace and find some stunning spots off the beaten path.

Koh Tao

Koh Tao is an island that every snorkeler and diver dreams of. Known for its incredible underwater world, you’ll find vibrant coral reefs, sea turtles, and colourful fish around every corner. If you’ve ever wanted to get your scuba diving certification, Koh Tao is one of the best places in the world to do so.

But it’s not just about diving – the island also offers a laid-back vibe, cosy beach bars, and stunning views that are perfect for relaxing after a day in the water. You’ll definitely want to catch the sunset at one of the many bars, where you can enjoy a refreshing cocktail and good company.

Top Tip: Sign up for a dive course to experience the island’s underwater magic. Whether you’re a beginner or advanced diver, Koh Tao has something for everyone.

Koh Samui

For those who want the best of both worlds, Koh Samui is the island to visit. From lively nightlife and beach parties to peaceful spots where you can unwind, Koh Samui offers a little bit of everything. Whether you’re browsing local markets, indulging in street food, or exploring jungle trails, you’ll never run out of things to do.

The beaches here are some of the most beautiful in Thailand, with Chaweng Beach offering vibrant energy and Lipa Noi providing the perfect quiet retreat. Don’t forget to visit Big Buddha for a dose of culture and history.

Top Tip: Koh Samui’s night markets are the perfect spot to sample some of the best street food you’ll find in Thailand – from Pad Thai to fresh fruit shakes, it’s a foodie’s dream.

Khao Sok

If you’re after something truly unique, Khao Sok National Park is an absolute must. This stunning park is home to Cheow Lan Lake, a beautiful emerald lake surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and dense jungle. Staying in a floating bungalow on the lake is an experience you won’t forget.

From long-tail boat rides to jungle treks and even stargazing at night, Khao Sok offers a peaceful retreat into nature. The tranquillity of the lake and the surrounding rainforest will make you feel like you’ve entered another world.

Top Tip: Spend a night or two in one of the floating bungalows for the ultimate Khao Sok experience. Waking up to the sound of the jungle and the beauty of the lake is something you’ll never forget.
